New bis(organotin) materials containing a xylyl bridge

Srawan K Thodupunoori, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

The work embodied in the present thesis is focused on the synthesis of bis (organotin) compounds, in which two tin centers are bridged by the xylyl group, R3Sn-E-SnR3 (R = Ph, E = 1, 4-xylene (1), R = Ph, E = 1, 2-xylene (2) R = Ph, E = 1, 3-xylene (3), R = Ph, Me, E = 1, 4-xylene (4), R = Me, E = 1, 4-xylene (5). The synthetic protocol for this class of compounds involves a salt-elimination reaction between the organic halide and triorganotin lithium (R3Sn +Li-) reagents in appropriate molar ratio using THF as solvent, equation (i).* The compounds α,α1-bis (triphenyltin)-p-xylene (1), α,α1-bis (triphenyltin)-o-xylene, (2), α,α1-bis (triphenyltin)-m-xylene (3), α,α1-bis (diphenylmethyltin)-p-xylene (4), α,α1-bis (trimethyltin)-p-xylene (5) have been isolated as white solid materials and are soluble in common organic solvents such as dichloromethane, chloroform and THF, etc. (Abstract shortened by UMI.) *Please refer to dissertation for diagrams.
