Abstract

This study attempts to quantify brand name prescription medication price differences for the borderplex sister cities of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and El Paso, Texas. Medicine Prices in El Paso are collected from Walgreens, a retail chain pharmacy, and prices for Ciudad Juarez are collected from Smart, a chain supermarket with a pharmacy department, and from Medimex, a medicine distributor. To examine the price differences a one-way ANOVA test in conjunction with Tukey's multiple comparison procedure and 2-sample t test are applied to the means of brand name medicine prices in both cities. On average, a consumer can save from 25 to 27 percent when purchasing brand name prescription medications at small traditional pharmacies at minimum price and at Smart, respectively.
