Stacy Annette Linna, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

This study focuses on the representations of single moms in contemporary television programs. Desperate Housewives, Gilmore Girls, and Sex and the City are television series that influence and portray societal norms in reference to lone mothers. Media shape our social representations and the perceptions of single mothers. Using feminist and agenda setting theories, I argue media depict single moms and their relationships as both negative and positive. These series were analyzed to understand that media play a key role that leads society through choices and agency to conclusions of single moms.
