Abstract

A twenty-five year old African American man, Alexander van der Pool, loses his job and his insurance to purchase his meds for Schizophrenia. He his holed up in his sister's bedroom for three months where he reads incessantly, begins to write poetry and hears voices. The primary voice he hears is that of Bigger Thomas, the protagonist of Richard Wright's Native Son. After writing numerous poems, Alex wants to see if they are any good and takes his work to a local community college. He visits a literature class and when they try to put him out, he pulls out a gun and takes the class hostage. ^ KEYWORD: (Racism, Poetry, Bigger Thomas).^
