The test-retest reliability of the OARS Multidimensional Function Assessment Questionnaire in older Mexican American adults
The objective of this thesis was to determine with older Mexican-American, study as a group, to determine if the Older American's Resources and Services, OARS, questionnaire (part a) would be helpful to determine the needs assessment of this ethnic group. This part permits assessment of individuals' functioning in five dimensions: social and economical resources, mental and physical health and self care capacity. Working with older Mexican-American was necessary to determine the reliability of part A of the OARS questionnaire. In order to determine if the OARS questionnaire was a reliable instrument for older Mexican-American adults a convenience number of 250 older Mexican-American were randomly selected by census track, age and senior recreation centers. The seniors were recruited from 24 senior recreation centers from ages 65 to 98 years. From the 250 participants, 193 did the questionnaire in Spanish and 57 English. After finishing with the 250 seniors, it was necessary to check the reliability of the OARS multidimensional functional assessment questionnaire by doing a test-retest. A convenience number of 30 seniors (15 women and 15 men) randomly selected from the first 250 was required to participate in the second administration of the questionnaire. The age groups of these 30 participants were 14 participants, from 65–74 years, 13 participants from 76–85 years, and 3 participants from 86 and up. From the 30 participants, 13 of them did the questionnaire in English and 17 in Spanish. The results obtained from the reliability test were high correlated comparing the first and second administration, demonstrating that the OARS questionnaire is a reliable instrument to determine the assessment needs of the older Mexican-American. ^
