A digital implementation of an artificial neural network

Gabriela Garcia, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

Artificial neural networks are now being used for many applications in the technology world. Signal processing, medicine, business, speech recognition and much more are areas in which artificial neural networks are being used. ^ The objective of this thesis was to describe the process of designing, testing, and analyzing an artificial neural network using Altera's Max+Plus II. Computers are becoming faster and faster as days go by, yet there are still things that cannot be accomplished by just using computers. Speed is becoming very important and another aspect of this thesis was to make the artificial neural network more parallel since that is one of its inherent characteristics. Hardware implementation of an artificial neural network is important in producing much more speed. ^ The final design of an artificial neural network was simulated in Altera's Max+Plus II program and produced good results. This design serves as the basis of being able to put it on an FPGA. ^
