Perceptions of social status gains made by pregnant teenagers and adolescent mothers
Abstract
Analyzing qualitative data from six pregnant or adolescent mothers, this paper attempts to recognize and understand the range of social, cultural, and individual factors that can influence a young woman's decision to intentionally engage in sexual behavior and her possible intention of becoming a mother to gain perceived status. The paper attempts to present a truthful and accurate account of the motivations, beliefs and values and explain the process in which these factors collaborate in the interview subject's life by focusing on themes that emerge from the interviews and observational data. A better understanding of the social antecedents of teenage pregnancy and adolescent motherhood would benefit service providers and may provide insight as to probable avenues towards its prevention.
