Coping with stressful life events: Psychometric characteristics of a new coping measure

Ernesto Marin, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

Researchers agree that the manner in which people cope with life events is vital to many life outcomes. Researchers have also acknowledged that our current understanding of how people cope in the real world is limited. There has been a long-standing demand for the development of accurate coping assessment methods. This study addressed this measurement issue with a new coping measure (a structured interview), designed to improve upon current measurement limitations. Good inter-rater reliability of this structured interview was achieved in rating coping responses to academic stressors. The sample consisted of 51 undergraduate college students primarily of Hispanic ethnicity. The approach used in this study of coping was a transactional-oriented, instead of a trait-oriented, approach. This is an important first step in introducing a new coping measure that addresses many of the problems with coping measurement present in the field today. Since the reliability of this interview was established in this study, future research should focus on examining the validity of this structured interview.
