Level set method for crack like geometry

Javed Bilal Khan, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

Presented here is an efficient and modular level set method for crack like topologies, e.g. cracks, localization, damage and defects. The method exploits the fact that for such geometries the level set is fixed behind the crack tip data similar to vector level set work of Ventura et al.[9,10]. The method employs the structured background grid to store the data and by doing so a remarkably efficient update algorithm is developed which is applicable to finite elements, meshless and finite volume methods.
