Meta-analysis of submaximal treadmill protocols to evaluate their accuracy in predicting maximal VO(2)

Keith Jones, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

Traditional research articles apply a linear extrapolation techniques to estimate VO2max. In this thesis the statistical technique of Meta-Analysis will be applied to ten studies to evaluate the accuracy of the linear extrapolation technique. The studies deal only with treadmill protocols where the researcher performed both submaximal and maximal testing. The submaximal data will be used to calculate VO2max using two equations to predict the maximal heart rate using the age of the participant and to methods of calculating the effect size for each research study. The results showed that submaximal prediction of VO2 max using the 208 − .7age equation for prediction of maximal heart rate using age and either method of effect size calculation was accurate.
