Hip hop al Estilo Juárez: Organic intellectuals in Ciudad Juárez?

Daniel Sanchez, University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract

This thesis seeks to explore hip hop from Ciudad Juárez, where Mexican hip hop artists (MCs) use their music as an instrument of resistance and protest against the cartel lifestyle and violence that has overtaken their city, and much more than that, their lives. Their lyrics serve as first-person narratives, which touch on daily experiences of living in a city overrun by drug cartels and a corrupt government.
