When Dr. Haskell Monroe became president of The University of Texas at El Paso in 1980, as a historian he was interested in the forthcoming seventy-fifth anniversary of the institution. He wanted to commemorate the event with a special book. Not long after he began putting out feelers about an anniversary book, the Alumni Association was approached by the Donning Company about sponsoring a picture history. Why not do it for the Diamond jubilee? suggested Steve DeGroat, the president.
